“Prints of these first pictures are preserved in a photograph album … the very first one is among them. It is a picture of our house at Overfield … When Uncle Stock helped me develop the plate he gave me my first instruction in photography, ‘Always take a picture of a building or rectangular object, Jossie, so that two sides will be shown in the picture’” (Hannum, p. 107).

The Moses Palmer - William Hannum house was built c. 1775 on 86 acres of land owned by Moses Palmer. Joshua Eyre Hannum’s grandfather, William Hannum II, purchased the property in 1844 and added the front mansard roof section. The Hannums affectionately dubbed the home “Overfield,” and it stayed within the Hannum family until the 1930s.

Overfield remains intact today, but the acreage has dwindled to 1.67 acres from 86. The home is a private residence.
